Ordinary work, which is what most of us do most of the time, is ordained by God every bit as much as is the extraordinary. All work done for God is spiritual work and therefore not merely a duty but a holy privilege.

    the winter feels

    January 11, 2023 /

The thing about winter in South Carolina is that it’s not all that different from fall in South Carolina or spring in South Carolina, weather-wise. And that makes me sad. I need some snow. A crisp breeze. A forecast with low temperatures. A chill factor. I know I have chosen to live in the wrong part of the country to achieve these simple winter goals but I am not able to alter that course currently. You know what month is not my favorite? This one. Or February. Both. I have two months that are not my favorites. But here we are anyway. I like starting things. But being in the…

    today at the burrow.

    September 6, 2018 /

Today my two adorable grandkids and their pretty momma stopped over for a little visit. I taught a history lesson that included the story of both the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower and suddenly our lunch conversation had all of us wanting to plan a trip to New York City.  (Maybe Paris next year – right?) I drove Piper to get her cute little pixie haircut that she asks for about once a year.     There were math lessons and one box unpacked from the recesses of the barn.  (It was clothing – a missing box of girls clothing for which Mosley rejoiced.) I planned for…

a post in which I pretend we are chatting in person

    September 1, 2016 /

My hair is curly wavy messy, but after my brilliant stylist and friend Brittani gives it a cut she likes to blow dry it straight and it’s so shiny and different that it’s a game I play to see how many days I can leave it that way before I am forced to wash it. Am I the only one that plays that game? We’ve lived in this house for about five years I think and today the laundry room light bulb blew out for the first time.  It was tricky to get the globe off to get to the light.  I think it required the help of four…

    Words on the wall

    February 7, 2014 /

Kevin needed a desk in his upstairs office. Our school room had three desks. It only seemed right to send one of those upstairs. Moving that desk out naturally meant that I needed to rearrange the space to accommodate the change. That, plus the acquisition of a long slim book shelf for $20 from a second hand shop. Also, this little treasure of a box for even less. And, also, the obvious fact that I love a change was enough to propel me forward. In moving the desk and locating the only wall long enough for the new bookshelf I realized I had to move my giant magnetic board. I…

    a little something something

    June 27, 2013 /

Did a little front porch rearranging recently. (I like to shift what I already own so I trick myself into thinking I have something different than I had before.) I had Kevin draw an artsy chalkboard sign for me.   I strung it up with a swath of red burlap. I grabbed an old favorite hand-me-down enamel basin, a star crafted by my mom from tobacco sticks from the farm, a collection of shells from our beach trips, a wooden pulley, fresh flowers in a Coke bottle and a small bar of soap. Added a broken down chair that’s been around our house for a decade.  (Kevin said I needed…

a little change goes a long way

    July 29, 2010 /

You know I love to rearrange furniture. But sometimes I don’t have that much time. Or that many options. (There are only so many ways one can rearrange three pieces of furniture in a narrow room when one’s husband insists that all three pieces of furniture face a certain wall featuring a certain screen.) So I change what I can. I alter all of the containers, jars and stuff sitting on the kitchen counters. I give my favorite glass oatmeal container a touch of new life with a cute label and a bit of ribbon taken from my birthday flowers from Leanne. I switch the locations of all of my…
