five finds friday (the worst jeans you’ll ever see, Otto says something funny and Dolly is the best)

Has this week been kind to you?

This week has handed me a stack of “you messed this up” and “hey, here’s another bill” and “whoa – how did it get to be so late so soon?” (Which is a quote from Dr. Seuss, by the way, so that I don’t add plagiarism to my list of wrong doings and inefficiencies this week.)

But also. This week has been fine.

Does that make sense anywhere outside of my own head?

funny

It’s our Break Week from school.

One day I let the kids watch far too much TV. I looked at Otto, lounging on the sofa, having hardly moved most of the day. I said, “Son. Is your brain dead yet?”

He barely glanced my way, shifted only the tiniest bit.

“No,” he replied, voice flat. “But it has become comfortably numb.”

fashionable

Let me show you what is most assuredly NOT fashionable.

Can you imagine any actual human being that you know wearing these??

Or these? (Which are currently on sale for $16.)

flavorful

I know I sing the praises of my Instant Pot all the time. It deserves those words of affirmation. It works hard for me.

What’s for dinner?

Everything is in the freezer?

Fine – just take that chicken directly from the freezer and put it in the instant pot with some beans and broth, some chiles and tomatoes – and in about half an hour (HALF AN HOUR) you can have dinner ready.

Here’s the recipe – Southwest Shredded Chicken Bowls

faithful

The internet can be a pretty bleak place. It sort of feels at its worst right now. (Although I guess people have always been saying stuff like that and it makes me sound old to add my voice to this cry.)

Which means when I find people online who are doing bright and hopeful and encouraging things, well – I want to celebrate those people.

Sharon Says So is one of those people.

She’s a teacher and I already have learned SO much about government and the way it works through her super helpful feed.

(Now, she does post A LOT in her stories so I just read what I can and what I want and I never try to play catch up – that would be crazy with her.)

She’s all about facts only and that’s refreshing. I am capable of forming my own opinion, thank you very much internet.

Even more than the legitimately helpful information she puts out, she also is up to really really good things. Right now she has this helpful Google Doc where you can donate directly to people in Texas who need help. Not long ago she helped raise literally millions of dollars to pay off people’s medical bills. It was incredible.

How much better is it when we use our collective online forces for good rather than for evil?

feels

In the More Good News department – that Dolly Parton is just the best.

The state of Tennessee was about to build a statue to her and she declined, saying that right now was not the time to be putting her on a pedestal.

How can you not love Dolly?
