five finds friday (shower curtains, carnitas, earrings and how I’m either denying reality or crying – so little in between)

This season has been like a tilt-a-whirl of emotions. For everyone at my house.

We’re tired.

We’re emotional.

We’re wrapping up a few things and it kind of feels like May wants to smother us slowly and there’s so much celebration and good planned but it’s also tangled up with bittersweet and uncertainty and sadness and what does feel a bit like the universe shifting for some of the people I love and live with.

funny

This week Mosely came out of the bathroom and said, “Your shower curtain fell down.”

And she was right. It had.

At some point I assigned the fixing of that situation to Bergen.

When I headed into the bathroom later that night, I saw that he had, indeed, fixed the problem.

However, he had mounted the shower curtain and its rod so incredibly and oddly high.

As in – the shower curtain was about three feet from the ground.

Now, that was pretty ridiculous.

Has he never seen a shower curtain before?

Does he not know their purpose?

Has he ever showered?

But, what might actually be more pathetic, is that some dearly beloved human in my home actually TOOK A SHOWER with the curtain like that. Just stood right in that shower and let the water pour beneath the three foot high shower curtain onto the rug like it was no big deal.

That’s what living with four teenagers is like.

fashionable

I mean, it’s been a tiny little while since I’ve shared any new earrings.

I found this company – Paper Clay – on Instagram. (Has anyone heard of them?) I think this ended up being a Lost Valley Ranch connection – one of their former staff now works with Paper Clay in Charlotte.

Anyway, these feather earrings – SO cute. I want them in another color, but I don’t know what color that would be.

flavorful

Carnitas.

I’ve heard of them. I’ve eaten them.

But I’ve never made them myself.

I didn’t even know exactly what they were.

Well, turns out, carnitas is really just pork prepared in a particular fashion.

The fashion which is, delicious.

At some point in the recent past – carnitas was on the menu for Easter with friends.

And – Instant Pot to the rescue – it was amazing and oh-so-convenient.

So – here you go.

This is the carnitas recipe I used. I followed the Instant Pot version and it was truly delicious.

faithful

Oh, God’s faithfulness to me for years and years has been through my friendships. I’m so fortunate.

I’m so thankful for the texts, the voices on the other end of the Marco Polo messages, the stopping by my house with a London Fog, the talking through ALL the details of graduation with me, the help, the laughter, the just knowing that I can truly and deeply count on these people is one of the brightest spots in my life.

feels

I don’t think I can even touch this category this week.

EVERYTHING has me crying.

This week was Piper’s last week with her math tutor – a dear and delightful senior in high school who has blessed our home more than she can possibly imagine by coming over two days a week to teacher Piper math.

I was telling Emmy just how grateful I was for her – just how thankful I was that the situation worked out and that she really redeemed math for Piper – gave her new eyes and new joy in a subject I mostly manage to mangle for my children.

And, of course, I started to cry.

I was texting with my friend Katie (who has one daughter graduating from high school and one daughter getting married!!!) and we joked about even our dreams bringing us to tears lately.

We’re emotional over every single little thing.

We both agreed that our plan right now is some sort of combination of Shove It Down and Denial.

We’ll feel all the things again in June I guess, when we have time to breathe.
