Five Finds Friday (27) (guess what Trader Joe’s carries now?)

(drum roll.)  It’s Friday.

Some weeks I think about skipping these posts.

But my friend Walter says he likes them.  So.  I mean.  I’ve got to keep Walter happy.

.

FUNNY

This wig.

And what it apparently brings out in people.

Also.

This dog in this hat.

FASHIONABLE

(See above.)

I hope it’s fashionable to wear cowboy hats in Colorado – and every stop between here and there – because my boys are pretty stoked about their hats.

(Which is good, since I am pretty stoked about how adorable they look while wearing them.)

FLAVORFUL

It’s a small thing really.

But there we were last Sunday, completing our weekly food acquiring expedition at ye olde Trader Joe’s, when I spied with my little eye a new Trader Joe’s offering.

Marshmallows.  (A word I famously misspell.  And that misspelling apparently brings Emma great joy as she likes to point out that I misspell the word marshmallows routinely.  I don’t know why.  It’s a brain lapse for me.)

But far more important than my spelling issues is the fact that Trader Joe’s has marshmallows now you guys.

I mean.  Think about it.  They already have the best graham crackers.  (It’s just true.)   Add to that some delicious chocolate offerings.  Uh.  You know where I am going with this – am I right?

And you might be tempted to think – they’re just marshmallows.  Trust me, they are not just marshmallows.

Try them and see what you think.

FAITHFUL

When I was riding in my friend Beth’s car she had this whole cool blue tooth system thing and her phone just automatically was playing her music from her iPhone and I was super impressed.

She played a song for me and I just loved it and have been listening to it ever since.

It’s called “His Name” by a band I’d never heard of – Urban Rescue.  (Which isn’t saying anything at all, as there are a billion musicians I have never heard of.  For instance, Sia.  And I only heard of her last night as we watched the Survivor finale and she made a surprise appearance from the audience.  She wears a wig to cover her face.  Like, all the time.  I get anonymity.  And I can’t say I blame her.  But.  A wig is covering her entire face. All the time.)

But back to this point.  (I am very distracted tonight.  Maybe the second slice of Mosely’s delicious chocolate cake covered in ganache is making me punchy.)

The point is this song – “His Name”.

Look at these lyrics:

There’s a father when your father walks away

A friend when no one else knows your name

A light that shines when all the world goes dark

A hand that holds you when you fall apart

His name is

Healer of your deepest scars

Father of your broken heart

His name is

MERCY

POWER

FREEDOM

Oh, His name

His name is Jesus

Fear will fall before his mighty hand

And every wall of doubt will start caving in

The tears you cry will turn to victory

The sun will rise and soon your eyes will see

His name is Healer of your deepest scars

Father of your broken heart

His name is MERCY POWER FREEDOM

There’s such freedom and such truth in those words.

FEELS

This week London and Mosely have been attending a day camp about Beowulf.  They’re doing cool stuff with the ancient text through theatre and metal work and stage combat and it’s really been a fabulous camp for the girls.

It’s been a great experience and at the week’s end they are loving it, but they were apprehensive the first day.

And it’s different with kids that you homeschool because I am not frequently in a position of dropping them off and leaving them at a brick building without me.

I know they’re big, guys.  I know they’re fine.

But it’s a little new to us.  (So bear with me.)

And seeing them suddenly look kind of tiny against that brick wall sort of weighed on my heart.

Knowing they were just waiting.  Wondering who they would meet and what they would see and how the day would go and what was expected of them.  All brand new to their life stories.

Pulling out the car and going someplace else.

It’s been fun to hear them come home and share their experiences.  To listen to the stories and to watch the lively reenactments for the entertainment of their younger siblings.

(And it’s taken a lot of work to keep this daily camp thing going each morning.  Shoot, one day these troopers had to push our car when the battery died.  Man, they never cease to amaze me.  They triumph over adversity all the day long.)

One piece that has especially been a balm to my mother’s heart is the camaraderie I have seen developing between these two girls who naturally are as different as salt and pepper.

It’s still not the dreamy sister love I would hope for them, but it’s a shared bond and a fun companionship with more laughs and good stories than frustrations and irritations this week.

And that makes my heart rejoice.

You got my curiosity up, because I am also hip and had no idea who Sia is. ???? So instead of googling her or looking her up on Wikipedia like a normal person, I watched her on Carpool Karaoke on YouTube. Everything I needed to know about her, plus a host with a British accent. Ha! Anyway, it was entertaining and informative and yet I am too old and practical to pretend to understand the wig for mystery purposes. Probably because I’ve managed to avoid the paparazzi and fame simply by not being famous. So I do not need a wig. For that, I feel blessed.

You don’t know me,but I know Riley, and I really like the way you write and the things you do with your kids reminds me of the best parts of my homeschooling & growing up years! You know, like 5 years ago 🙂
I discovered Urban Rescue maybe about a year ago,and they’ve been an enormous blessing this past year. Especially “Your love is holding me now”, “Provider”, and “These Limbs”. Actual good music with actually worshipful lyrics (is that a word? Probably not) .

      Thank you!

I LOVE hearing from grown up home schooled people. It’s hope-giving! 🙂

I’ll need to listen to more Urban Rescue now. I heard “Provider” just the the other day and loved it.

My wife really likes your Five Friday Finds. She shoves me off the computer so she can read it, Ha! So please DON’T stop!
On the topic of dropping off the kids. Back during the Day when our son started Kindergarten at a small public school in Texas I would drive around to the back entrance to the school and drop him off. Now the principal of this school was a Big Texan by the name of Mr. Harrelson. The rear entrance had a canopy over it. Mr. Harrelson would sit under the canopy every day, sipping coffee and greet EVERY child by name as they entered the school! You know what I call that?…PRICELESS!!

I’m not for marital fights – but if they are going to be over reading a blog post, it’s probably okay! 🙂

Mr. Harrelson sounds like a great principal!

Marshmallows!?! Oh how wonderful! That’s one thing I’ve actually wished they carried. And sprinkles. And jello. (Because my mom always makes it, and my kids love it and ask for it, but it’s just so not a real food. And I feel guilty anytime I make it–which isn’t often. But it might be more if TJ’s sold some.)

And please don’t stop your Five Finds Friday posts. Because this morning, for instance, I woke up and thought, “Oh! It’s Friday! I need to check the blog!” And it was a happy thing to look forward after a long night with a sick baby. But then other days, I wake up and don’t even know what day it is until I see you posted your weekly Friday blog. And I think, “Oh wow! It’s Friday already!! Really?!”

So I don’t know who Walter is, but I agree with him! And happy Friday. : )

    • laceykeigley

      Thank you!

Yes — jello-o. Maybe one day.

I love that you gauge Fridays by theses posts — what an honor!! 🙂

I, too, was excited to see TJ’s marshmallows this week! But I was thinking of pairing it with their Crisp Rice cereal. Yum! Also, I tried the dark chocolate mint creams, after your recommendation and yes, very yummy. Too good, really! Think I’ll probably stick with the Honey Mints as I feel healthier after eating them and I can be satisfied with just one, ok, maybe two. 😉
