The Dollar Shave Club: A Review

Obviously I love when stuff I need comes to my door.  (Amazon.  ePantry.)

In case if it isn’t already self-explanatory, here’s why I love stuff coming directly to my door:

  1.  I get to stay home.  (Duh.)  It’s kind of hard to homeschool if you are NEVER home. (Sure, I like homeschooling at our favorite restaurants and taking school to the mountains and I think RV schooling would actually be fabulous for a season, but you know what I mean.  If I am running errands all day, then I have no time to oversee math or writing or read great novels together.
  2. I spend LESS money.  In a store when I enter for, say – dog food, but then see a candle on sale, I want to buy that candle.  It’s on sale – you know?  I spot construction paper and am reminded that we need construction paper.  I recall that maybe Piper could use some new tights.  I’m suddenly convinced that a new shirt on clearance will be just the thing.  See what I mean?  There’s no sales rack in my kitchen.  No special aisle filled with cute notebooks and fresh Sharpies.  In the kitchen I won’t be tempted to buy extra socks or two bags of Easter bunny-shaped marshmallows if I NEVER see those things.
  3. I save time.  The time driving to the store.  The time perhaps stopping for a lunch because time got away from us and somehow it’s lunch time and we are all starving.  As a person with vastly limited resources in the time department, time saved always equals money saved in my eyes.

How does all this relate?

That’s a really great question.

You’ve probably heard about the Dollar Shave Club.

I’m pretty certain I never introduce new things to people – I just pull out stuff you already know about.  I’m slow to most trends like that.  Plus, I like to experiment with the product for a while before I share it here – usually.  Anyway.  I signed up for Dollar Shave Club about six or seven months ago.  Maybe a year?  Who can calculate the days and months any longer?

It’s a company targeted to men, I guess, but they’re just razors, so – whatever.

I think razors are shamefully overpriced.  Like, oddly so.  I can’t wrap my head around why razors are so expensive and why they are so hard to buy at the store.  They keep them all locked up in some special case and you have to ask permission to touch them and it’s all just too much effort for a product I use nearly every day of my life.

The Dollar Shave Club is a super simple concept.

You sign up – pick from three tiers of razor types.  (Yep. I picked middle of the road – no surprise – right?  Not the cheapest.  Not the best.  Just the middle.)

After you buy a handle, you just pay one price each month – not a dollar though guys – why did they name it that anyway?

Sidenote — they DO actually sell one version that is a single dollar.  (Plus $2 shipping and handling.  So.  Almost.)

But I pay $6. I get five razors.  Delivered in my mailbox once a month.

Actually – I have a couple extra now so I could skip a month if I need to.  Which you have the option to do – you can pick a delivery of every other month.

(Hold on.  ——  I just did that finally.  Now it’ll come every other month.)

Anyway.

The razors arrive and there you go.

Razors are NOT $6 at Target.  At the price razors are at Target – I would never use a new one every single week.  Now I kind of do.  Sort of.  Sometimes.  So, it’s both cheaper and more convenient.

Of course there’s an up sale on their website – buy more products.  Get more stuff put in your monthly box.  It’s fine stuff I guess.  If I was a dude, I might order it.  I am not a dude.  I do, however, have several little dudes who live in my home.  For one of their little dude bums, I purchased a container of Charlie One Wipes.  Otto is a giant fan of them.  (Is that something that will embarrass him later?  Eh.  Seems minor compared to so much other stuff that will embarrass him more.)

He asks for them by name – “Mommy – do we have any Charlie One Wipes left?”

So sometimes – about every three months – I add a container of the One Wipes to my order.

(Once, they were having a sale and this Shave Butter was on sale.  I tried it.  I liked it.  However, I have never reordered it since then.)

It is literally as simple as it sounds.  Razors in the mailbox each month.

If you’d like to try it too – use this link.  (Yes.  If you use my link and sign up for the “club” I receive a $5 credit on my account.  I figured you should know.)

And sure,  I like the assistance in purchasing my now bi-monthly razor supply, but mostly I like to share things that help save money, streamline an aspect of life and generally make small things even simpler.  I think Dollar Shave Club does that.

Have any of you guys ever tried them before?

Many years ago my older daughter pointed out that men’s razors are made for faces and are much gentler on the skin. DUH! So I switched to man’s razors and never went back. I have a huge deep drawer full of razors from my coupon mania days. I think they will last me for another 10 years!

You know – I should have included how much I enjoy their packaging. It cracks me up.

That is a bonus! I too adore good packaging and marketing materials.
