Five Minute Friday: Paint

The day is Friday.

Time for the weekly challenge fellow writer Lisa-Jo Baker offers on her blog.

She chooses a word – you write about that word for five minutes only.

You share your five minutes of writing and you encourage others to try it too.

The word this Friday is PAINT.

The colors are thin.

It’s so easy to add too much water.  The blues are dripping and the greens are almost monotone and the picture lacks a vivacity that my real life certainly contains.

Sometimes that’s how I think my words come out – too thin and too much water and too drippy.

They don’t measure up.

And then I try to paint in the other direction – spare the water, keep the colors thick and bold and difficult to blend.

And somehow the picture comes out harsh.  Too bright.  More intense than my real life actually is.

Painting is hard work.

It just winds up slightly too much or not nearly enough.

It’s like writing.

And child-raising.

And marriage-making.

When the colors blend and the paint isn’t too thick and the water isn’t too thin – it’s sort of a little miracle and when you step back from the canvas – you can’t believe how pretty it all actually is.
