Five Finds Friday (surprise! & the warmest socks & the silliest picture)

We all know why this week sped right past all of us.

Yes – it’s already Friday you guys.

Here we go ……

FUNNY

Humor plays a vital role in my life.

If it’s not outright sustaining, it absolutely is what makes certain days feel endurable.  (Is endurable a word?)

Our friend Abby has endeared herself to my children through several methods.  One – she sends stellar care packages that have rather specific instructions on the outside.  Instructions such as “For Kids Eyes Only” and “Whatever You Do – Don’t Let Your Mom Open This Box”. Two – she shows up in surprise ways and says yes to whatever I’d probably say no to.   Three – she shares a legitimate affinity with them for cat memes.

I’m not kidding.

They laugh about them, create their own memes and share them when possible.

Recently London and Bergen created a few kitty memes on their own and we sent them on for Abby’s amusement.

Like this one —

Abby is also the queen of Being More Impressive Than Me.

Naturally, she sent back a homemade meme as well.

FASHIONABLE

I’ll be honest, the “fashionability” of this entry might be called into question.  (Also – is fashionability a word?  Am I just making up my own language on this post?)

So – these socks.

A generous representative from Heat Holders sent me this pair of socks to try out.  We chatted about the socks this summer, I received them some time when Chacos with no socks were the ruling footwear of the day so they stayed in a laundry basket for a few months.

But here I am now, residing in my old fashioned home with its old fashioned insulation and socks entitled Heat Holder suddenly have risen in their appeal.

I really wouldn’t care if these socks were any color at all – or covered in images of tiny reindeer or heads of cabbage.  They are SO warm and comfortable.  They are very thick, which makes them a little more challenging to wear with shoes.  I basically treat them like bedroom slippers instead.  I had to share them with my eleven year old son because he discovered their amazing warmth recently as well.  They sell colors that are actually within the realms of fashionability too – cute stripes and your standard color offerings as well.  They even have kids’ versions which really serve more as bedroom slippers.

In the past I have purchased Heat Holders leggings at Target or Wal-Mart and they are incredibly warm.  (I find they do pill a little after multiple washings, which is a shame, as they are much much warmer than most leggings, but I’ve still kept mine because of their warmth.  I pull them out on snow days or under ski pants.)

I wear these socks around the house all the time – just ask my children.  Or my friends who unexpectedly drop by.

FLAVORFUL

Have I told you about Cereal Sundaes?  I’m sure I have.

I’ll telling you again.

It’s the simplest treat – or meal, no judging from me – that you can have.  And when you tell your kids what you are eating, you are suddenly a hero.  (Top THAT Abby – you better tell your kids that I created Cereal Sundaes if you serve them a giant bowl!)

Except, I didn’t create Cereal Sundaes.  My mom did.  Well, that’s what she told us, anyway.

Your ingredient list: Cereal (preferably Honey Nut Cheerios).  Milk.  Vanilla Ice Cream.

Put them in the bowl in this order:

Vanilla Ice Cream
Cereal
Milk  (Not as much as you would normally use for cereal.)

And then you eat it.

It’s icy cold.  It’s a great combination.  And it feels like a holiday.

FAITHFUL

There was a time Piper could neither read nor write.  It was such laborious work for her.  She dreaded it all.  She avoided it all.  She ran from it and complained about it every single day of school.

When I would ask her to write even a sentence or two on her own, without my spelling aid at all, she would have a breakdown.  It was a great way to spend a day, I’m telling you.

This week she handed me her notebook.

“Mom,” she said,  “I’ve written a story here.  It’s a few chapters.  Will you read it and leave me some notes and ask me some questions about it?”

Yes I will.  Yes I will.

It’s been a slow and steady, turtle winning the race, kind of work – this writing ordeal for my third grader.

But goodness, I’d call this glorious progress.  Writing a story.  Without being asked.  On your own.  By yourself.  In your free time.  And wanting me to critique it.

I’ll celebrate that tortoise at the finish line victory all day long.

FEELS

It’s so fun to surprise your children.

Mosely turned THIRTEEN yesterday.

After dinner a couple of her friends came over, without her knowledge, and gathered in our kitchen.

I had invited them over to enjoy some cake and to watch a movie that Mosely has been waiting to watch until she turned thirteen.

We called her from the other side of the house and she came to the kitchen, completely unaware that she had friends waiting there for her.

As we said “surprise” and then told her our plan of watching a movie with her friends right then she had this absolute, perfectly innocent and sweet look upon her lovely face.  Her eyes were wide.  She was completely taken by surprise and she had no idea what to say.  Her face was all lit up and grinning and suddenly surprisingly shy and she just held back and blinked a lot and asked, “Really?  Right now?”

It was – and I reserve this word for times when I mean it – precious.

What a privilege to love my daughter in this simple, but important, way.
