Five Finds Friday (chicken pot pie with the best crust & chivalry is still alive)

Blink.  Blink.

Actually – compared to last week – the one filled with sickness and such – this week was dreamy.  Lots of really good school days (good by MY standards, not the kids’ standards, because we got so much accomplished) and lovely fall weather.  I give this week a hearty thumbs up.

But good week or bad week, it’s pretty much over already and it’s Friday time again.

FUNNY

Scrolling through my photos I came across this picture, which London had altered for me without my knowledge.

It really made me laugh.

Say what you want about middle schoolers – an awful lot of the time they’re pretty fun.

FASHIONABLE

I love bracelets.  (You already know that.)

The only minor thing that ever makes me a little bummed to see fall and winter come along is the fact that you just can’t see the good bracelet stacks when you are wearing layers and sweaters and thumb hole shirts.  (Oh, but I love the thumb hole shirts.)

Currently this is about my favorite stack of bracelets to wear.

The pink wrap is from Noonday.  (It doubles as a headband too – like a fancy mature version of the black hair tie around your wrist.)  The leather cuff I can’t recall from whence it came but I’m thinking a random pop up shop from many years ago.  The anchor bracelet is one of my favorite pieces.  It comes from a local company – Maritime Supply.  I heart their stuff.  I actually want more so I can have alternative colors but it seems extravagant so I’ve not yet made the second purchase.  (Now they have a rope like option and multiple colors of leather and I think some other variations.)  I’ve worn mine so much that I’ve gotten paint on it and roughed it up quite a bit.

FLAVORFUL

For the second time, London crafted a delicious Chicken Pot Pie for us from this Pioneer Woman recipe.

It was good – you should have it soon.  It’s a cozy, wonderful autumn dinner.  (And the crust?  Man – it is the best!)

Unfortunately for us, the night London carefully crafted it we ran out of time and had to get out of the house fast to get the boys to their weekly Trail Life meeting.

But guess what morphs from sit down at the table comfort food to delicious and home cooked dinner on the go?

Apparently chicken pot pie in a mug does!

Seriously – it was perfect.  And it saved us an unnecessary expense at a fast food restaurant.

FAITHFUL

My new friend Holly shared this spectacularly sweet story of a God who provides Just Enough on her Facebook page this week.

Of course because of my own season of life, but also because it’s lovely, I cried when I read the description of her afternoon.

I asked Holly if I could share what she wrote here and she graciously said yes.

_____

Had some car trouble today. A kind friend came by and picked up the girls and gave them dinner while I waited outside their school for a tow truck to arrive. The estimate had been about an hour, so I found a shady spot, had my phone in one hand and my mace within reach of the other.

Around 5:30 the man I recognized to be the challenge teacher came out of the front door, and I accidentally startled him. “Oh! I didn’t see you there! If I had come out like a normal person then I would’ve seen you right away.” he joked.

I said, “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you. And normal is overrated.”.

He looked around the near empty parking lot and then back at me and said, “Is everything ok?”.

I smiled and said, “It is. I came to pick up my girls but then I couldn’t get my car started. Tried jumping it but it must be another issue. So my girls are with a friend and I’m just waiting for the tow truck. Thank you for asking.”.

He put his things down and said, “Oh I’m sorry. Well if it’s ok with you, I’ll just wait here with you.”.

I said, “Oh no. You don’t need to do that. It’ll be a while and I’m fine.”.

He shook his head and said, “Right. But see, chivalry is not dead. So I’m just going to stay.”.

{Yeah. How often does THAT happen?}

So the two of us chatted for a while. I told him who my girls are, he knew Lucy right away. He commented on how comfortable she is talking to everyone, and also that she’s quite precocious. I agreed, and then he made sure to know he meant that as a compliment.

A little while later the tow truck arrived and I thanked him for staying. He walked me over and let both the driver and me know that he wouldn’t be leaving until we did as well.

I don’t think anything bad would have happened to me tonight waiting alone outside the school. But it felt pretty fantastic that I had someone there who decided to make sure of it.

Also, the driver didn’t just hook my car up to his tow truck. He tried for 20 minutes to get it started. And it worked. So I didn’t need to get towed at all.

Earlier, while we were sitting in the car and I was trying to get the car started, I stopped to pray. Then a minute or two later, when I was still trying, to no avail, Lucy started praying. She said, “Please, God. Help our car to start. And if it’s not time to start, please send someone who wants to help us figure it out.”.

Feeling very grateful tonight, for very many things (and none of them are things).

FEELS

One afternoon this week the kids hung out at Riley’s place for a bit.

It is SO cute to see how deeply and truly the aunts and the uncles adore their nephew.
