Fast Flip: A Blue Orange Game Review

Here it is.

Fast Flip.

It’s a little triangular metal container that stores a game made by the clever guys and gals over at blue orange games.

(Which, by the way – I love that the games made by Blue Orange generally have the name of the game designer and creator on the game itself.  I like al little credit where credit is due – I think that’s cool.)

The cards are triangular shaped too, which Otto and Piper liked.

(I found them a little tricky to shuffle due to their shape, but not impossible.)

At first I thought this game was too similar in style to Spot It.  (Even though Spot It is one of our family’s – and particularly Otto’s – favorite game to play, I didn’t want another version of the same thing.)

But it really isn’t the same at all.

Fast Flip features fruit on the cards and also comes with number tokens and it’s much more about math and quick addition and subtraction and thinking in terms of numbers of objects.  It’s processing what you see quickly and taking in what you see quickly.  That’s a good shift for this game to make it uniquely its own thing, and also – because we always need help with making numbers and concentration and focus appealing in our house.

(Let’s also not talk about the fact that in these pictures my son’s dirty feet are on the kitchen table and I think there’s money sitting on plate in the background.  Whatever.)

This game is simple, but that can be its beauty.  You can play when you’re waiting for dinner if you only have a few minutes or you can play several rounds if the food is really slow.  (I thinking round only took us about ten minutes or so when three of us were playing.)

At the end of game play, I like the game.

I am not in love with it.  But I like it.

Otto, at seven, really enjoys it and asks to play it frequently.  He is speedy with his numbers and sharper than I am at the game so he likes to best me in a hurry on this one.

I do like the fact that all of us can play this game – up to 8 players can Fast Flip together.  And it’s sort of more fun with more people honestly.

The website says that three skills this game uses are

  • visual perception
  • processing speed
  • focus and attention

I think they’re totally spot on.  Again – which is why Otto is probably beating me.  I’m so distracted.

I also found the directions a little confusing at first (which is also sort of typical of me with written directions).  We played several times before I realized there was a handy video on the Blue Orange website.  It’s worth watching because now I understand how to play much better.  (And look – I’m saving you the energy of clicking on a link.)
