Story

there & back

It is always late when I write this blog.

And I am usually sleepy.

But I might be even more sleepy than usual.

Because I’ve been adventuring – you know?

Against all odds, my pal and former college roomie Beth and I met together in the mountains of North Carolina for some Girl Adventures.

I feel confident that I will revisit this experience in future posts, when I am less sleepy and it is less late.

I happened to arrive at our rustic-chic resort before Beth and I found myself with some things I am not very familiar with.

Alone time.  Silence.  Freedom of choice.

(I know I will delve into this later – I promise.)

This is what we did:

Lounged by the pool reading magazines, chatting idly and eating Golden Oreos.   Stared at the mountain view, the lake view, the sky, the trees, the green vines creeping up the walls of our little resort.  Watched the sunset over the mountains and the lake.  Played Scrabble.  Munched on complimentary snacks in the on site coffee house.  Drank water with cucumber slices in it.  Slept in.  Enjoyed breakfast with fresh jam and croissants. Rode down the Nantahala River with Josh, our expert rafting guide.  Ate lunch at a local dive called The Burger Basket.  Huge burgers, greasy fries, milkshake.  All consumed out by a stream on a big rock.  Horseback riding with Junie, a self-described “hillbilly, redneck Cherokee”.  (His words, I tell you.  His words.)  Shopped in cute stores in Bryson City.  Ate delicious strawberry crepes at The Cork & Bean.  Shopped and browsed at Nantahala Outdoor Center.  Lounged on the deck at our resort.  Played more Scrabble.  Enjoyed more complimentary snacks.  Slept in.  Another breakfast with cinnamon rolls and granola and yogurt.  Toured the Nantahala Gorge via ten high-in-the air ziplines for over two hours.  Visited a few more Bryson City shops.  Ate another crepe – this one filled with chicken, pesto and avocado slices.

And then we parted ways.

Beth headed north and I drove south.  (Well, actually, I drove east first and then south.)

Now I am home.

I was greeted by both good and bad within minutes of my arrival.

The bad?

Both Fox and Finn woke up from their naps with a dirty diaper.  (Welcome home, Mommy!)

The good?

Fox was standing in his crib when I entered his room and he said, most distinctly and for the first time, “Mah”!  (And we all know that means me!)
